RADAR ALERT:
Senate Judiciary May Act on VAWA This Week – Urgent to Contact Your Senators Now

We have just learned that the Senate Judiciary Committee has postponed the hearings on Supreme Court nominee John Roberts. Which means the Judiciary Committee is likely to do its final review on VAWA this week.

RADAR is asking that each and every person who reads this Alert to contact the two Senators from your state three times this week – on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Use fax, phone, or a combination of the two. If you call, ask to speak to the Senator’s Legislative Director or to the Legislative Assistant in charge of VAWA.

This is the key message to convey:

“In July, the House Judiciary Committee revised VAWA to make it gender-neutral. Now we are asking the Senate Judiciary Committee to build on what the House has done:

  1. Add language to allow programs that focus on serving male victims to become eligible for funding, and
  2. Eliminate language that implies that only women suffer from domestic violence.

Please ask the Judiciary Committee to assure that VAWA no longer discriminates against men.”

Keep your message short and sweet. We need to absolutely overwhelm the Senate with our message.

It’s gut-check time, folks. The Judiciary Committee may vote on VAWA later this week. Let’s not hold anything back.

To get the phone number and fax number of your Senator, go to http://www.senate.gov.
